Women have been omnipresent in American society since the nation was founded. They have played a plethora of different roles both in the home and at the workplace. The idea of a woman in America has grown and changed drastically throughout American history. It took hundereds of years for women to gain the rights and the respect that men enjoy in a multitude of fields. Today, women have achieved feats equivalent to and even greater than those that men have achieved. They are found working in almost every field of life, from the home to the office, the operating room to the battlefield, to the moon and beyond. This display serves to show the progression of American women over time. The exhibit is divided into three categories, each containing artifacts from a specific time period, marking a significant change in the feminist movement. The first category displays artfiacts from the First Wave Feminist Movement. This time period dealt with the legal boundaries binding the rights of women, such as the right to vote, The next category, depicting the Second Wave Feminist Movement, contains artifacts displaying how women entered various fields and careers, as well as overturned stereotypes about their gender. The last category, Third Wave Feminist Movement, includes artifacts depicting the concepts of modern day feminism, including embracing one’s gender and sexuality, being proud of one’s own personality, and learning to avoid conforming to the male gender’s definition of an ideal woman.
